Busy, stressed, pulled in a million directions… that feeling like you haven’t stopped, but haven’t got anything done. Welcome to motherhood, right? We hear so much about physical health and detoxing our bodies, but what about our minds? We all want to eliminate stress, gain greater clarity and de-clutter our minds. Well guess what? I have finally learnt how to do it. And it’s literally changed my life.
A few months ago I was a ball of anxiety. The trauma of losing my baby coupled with increasing demands of balancing work, family and modern living sent me spiraling into a state that I felt I couldn’t get out of. I was desperate to find a way of calming my thoughts and constant worries, but how do you calm down when you’re a busy mum and work as a ‘social influencer’- both jobs are never ending. I have to be “on” all the time.
I’d been practicing yoga for years and loved the few minutes of meditation at the end. I had always been interested in exploring this further, but I had my reservations. How could I possibly stop my thoughts when I am that person that writes lists about lists? And who has the time to stop and sit still everyday? Surely there are more productive things I should be doing? And geez, will I be chanting on a hill in a cheesecloth robe with a bunch of non-deoderant wearing hippies?
Enter The Broad Place. And breathe. Creators Jacqui Lewis and Arran Russell have adapted Ancient Knowledge for people living a busy, modern life. Essentially, The Broad Place provides tools and education for better living. The philosophy is that we can all have an incredible high grade life, with a little correction of our thinking and magnificent tools to cope and expand our consciousness. Take it from me, the process is beautiful and the results are life changing. And it’s super easy. I have never in my life felt more centred, clear and creative, and many people around me have noticed the difference.
So let me allow the creator of The Broad Place, author of the 7 day Mind Cleanse, speaker, mother and my Vedic Meditation teacher Jacqui Lewis tell you all about it. More people are turning to meditation than ever before, as the demands of modern day living increase. Meditation increases happiness and joy, eliminates stress, tension and fatigue , expands the conscious state, assists with physical health and wellbeing , produces greater clarity and creativity and increases vitality with less sleep. Meditation allows people to explore their spirituality, realise their potential and become the best versions of themselves.
No more is meditation considered woo-woo and hippy like. It is considered by many to be the top tool for clarity, increased intelligence, modern leadership, better rest, greater health and increased happiness. It is practised by some of the most successful CEO’s around the globe.
WHAT IS VEDIC MEDITATION?
Vedic Meditation is a mantra based meditation practice, where we gently and effortlessly repeat a special Sanskrit sound within the meditation silently with our eyes closed. We practice anywhere we can sit with our eyes closed for ideally 15-20 minutes twice a day. Vedic Meditation does two things, it releases stress, tension and fatigue from our nervous systems as well as expanding our conscious state – which means we are able to be more in touch with who we are. It’s not simply relaxing for 20 minutes whilst we sit there, as much work is done in the body and mind. We judge our practice by who we are in the world with our eyes open, not for the 20 minutes they are closed.
I hear this more than any other thing; ‘I can’t meditate, I can’t stop the thoughts’. I agree with various techniques it can be really hard, as I certainly tried so many types of meditation before Vedic. The key thing about meditation is that it’s like exercise, there are SO many different types, and it’s important you find one that suits you. I chose to teach Vedic Meditation because I loved it. It’s so easy to do, it’s manageable to fit into a packed schedule, you get incredible results from minimal input and anybody aged 5 to 95 can learn and practice with utter ease.
I teach many mums, and being one myself, I take great satisfaction that this type of meditation can be integrated with parenting. Let’s face it, we just do not have time to curl up somewhere quiet for an hour every morning. I have practiced Vedic meditation with Peppa Pig playing loudly, with lego being destroyed around me and now as she’s a little older being 8 years, with my daughter meditating with me or drawing next to me.
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO TELL PEOPLE WHO ARE A BIT UNSURE?
There are SO many myths about meditation!! First of all, Vedic meditation is not about stopping the thoughts, that you can’t move, have to sit in weird positions, become a vegan, chant and change your name! Vedic meditation is a mantra based meditation practice, that is incredibly easy to do once you learn through a fantastic teacher. We sit easily, repeat our mantra and it only takes 20 minutes. We do this to feel more clarity, creativity, more grounded and less stressed, tired and in general mental!
– that meditation is hard (you’re just not using the right technique if this is the case)
– that all meditation is made alike (definitely NOT true, different types get different results)
– that going for a walk or reading a book is the same as meditating as it’s relaxing. Vedic Meditation involves transcending all thought, and accessing a whole new layer of consciousness that cannot be accessed by engaging in activity.
– that you might be the only one to fail. No one fails Vedic meditation if taught and practised correctly.
WHAT DO YOU SAY TO BUSY MUMS WHO SAY THEY COULDN’T POSSIBLY SPARE 20 MINUTES TWICE A DAY TO PRACTICE?
I say to mothers who are just like me, highly engaged and achieving a lot in the world (even if that means just getting out of our pyjamas and now getting vomited on by a small person) that you can absolutely fit in 10 minutes. And work your way up to 20. And that there is nothing more important in the world to every around you, than you being at your optimal, and being happy, and that this is the most valuable investment in time for you and your life and those in it.
